Laura Borneman
My work is largely derived from nature and symbolizes aspects of change, fragility and transformation. I am interested in the order, repetition, pattern and life cycle of the natural world, and how the mind attempts to impose order on what often feels like chaos and disorder in our daily lives. The images I create also represent a highly personalized perception of experience, the physicality of the act of drawing and painting, and an attempt to visually describe the experience of time and solitude.
The level of realism varies in my work. The drawings are evidence of my need to become intimately familiar with the subject matter, whether the subject is landscape, architecture, still life or the human figure. I usually begin a series with a number of drawings executed in different materials, such as charcoal, pencil and/or pastel. The drawings most often lead to large-scale paintings where the essential forms of the subject matter become more abstracted. The paintings represent states of mind, emotions, responses to memories, and an attempt to create a sense of order, both visually and internally.
